It is true that not many companies will hire you as a graphic artist if you simply send a resume outlining your ten-year career in tax accounting! Even the best resume cannot hide the fact that your previous work experience has not qualified you for the position you seek.
When you network with people who need your products/services (or know others who do) there will be a natural interest in knowing more about your business. Stop, not so quick – the story of you and your business comes later. First, let’s walk through what happens at a software defined networking event and I will give you a tip for each step.
But the problem is, networking is not just working your contacts through the ‘net. Networking is still about making personal contacts and building relationships with professionals and colleagues who have similar goals in mind. And meeting those people in person.
You have a down line, people that you brought into the business to help you make more money. What are you doing to help them make money and become a success in the company. You have to give in order to receive, and really there is no greater sense of success then helping another person meet and achieve their goals. I have worked “with” many different MLMs and Networking companies and all of those people were great recruiters. They convinced me to come on board- but when I needed help to make a success of what I was doing, they were no where to be found. So why would I waste my time trying to make a business work, where those people got paid off what I was doing and they weren’t there to help me.
You may notice we have made no reference to open groups in this discussion. We believe there is an abundance of open networking groups and no need to create more. If you’re looking for an active, powerful, open group, look no further than your local chamber of commerce. If it isn’t functioning at a high level, volunteer to super-charge the networking for them. You will have an instant audience and you will be more likely to succeed.
At the very least, recognize that whenever there’s a networking conversation under way both parties are expanding their circle of influence. If you can make a concrete offer of support or assistance, so much the better. Doing so creates a positive association and could signal the beginning of an important business relationship. If you have the chance to lend practical assistance to a networking partner, you then have the chance to show off your skills, your team spirit and your work ethic in a ways that could soon have job offers coming your way.
